Introduction to Kenya

1-16-12

Jambo!

My name is Donya Khouryzat and I am posting my blog about the marvelous country of Kenya! Before we begin, I'd like to take some time to enrich our minds with some history of Kenya and facts about what makes it such an amazing place to live and visit. Stay tuned for some fun updates!

*Kenya gained independence from the United Kingdom in December 1963.

*Some of the oldest known palaeontological records of the history of mankind on earth have been found in Kenya.

*Most of the people in Kenya are either very rich or very poor. Very few people fall in the middle category.

*Kenya only has only two seasons - the rainy season and the dry season.

*The Great Rift Valley of Kenya was formed twenty million years ago, by splitting of the earth's crust.

*Kenya is the regional hub for trade and finance in East Africa.
*Mount Kenya is the largest mountain in Kenya and the second highest mountain in Africa.

*Professor Maathai, the Kenyan environmentalist, was the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize, in 2004.

*The most popular sports in Kenya are cricket, track and field, box, soccer, volleyball, rugby, tennis and field hockey.

*There are over 30 distinct languages and dialects spoken throughout the country, but the official languages of Kenya people are English and Swahili.

This link provides a detailed video of an introduction to Kenya that is very informative and interesting. One specific detail in particular that stands out to me and I believe will stand out to most viewers is the Swahilin phrase Hakuna Matata! which translates to "no worries" and is sort of a catch phrase in Kenya and was made popular by the epic movie The Lion King. Enjoy!
